Overview
Old Southwest Conference foes Baylor and SMU first met in 1916. The schools only 100 miles apart played every year since minus WWII in 1943-44 and in 1987-88 when SMU was put on NCAA death penalty. The series resumed in 1989 only to end several years later in 1995 when the SWC broke up.
In 1949, both teams entered the game ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time. Baylor would prevail over a All-American Doak Walker led SMU team 35-26.
During the 1975 game, Baylor would race to a 23-0 first half lead. SMU signal caller Chuck Benefield would lead the Mustangs comeback and edge the Bears 34-31.
The 1980 contest featurerd both programs entering both ranked in the top 20. The Mustangs raced to a early 21-0 lead in the 2nd quarter. After exchanging scores in the 3rd and trailing 28-14, Baylor would score 18 unanswered for the 32-28 victory. They would eventually win the SWC title & play Alabama in the Cotton Bowl.
After a couple more classic games for the rivalry in the 80's, SMU was hit with the NCAA deathy penalty in 1987 and 1988. When the series resumed in 1989, Baylor has dominated, winning eleven straight. That has helped the Bears take a one game lead in the series 37-36-7.
After Fridays showdown in Dallas, the two teams are only scheduled to meet once more in the forseeable future in 2016.
