Overview
Two of the most highly regarded and historic programs are set to meet this Saturday for the first time since 1996. Notre Dame is currenty second all-time in wins at 882. With 881 program wins, Texas could tie the Fighting Irish with a win.
The series between the two powers started in 1913 when the Fighting Irish traveled to Austin twice in three years. They won the first two games by a combined score of 66-14.
The next time they would meet would be in 1934, with the Longhorns traveling to South Bend for the first time and edging the Irish 7-6. The win was special for UT head coach Jack Chevigny. He was a former player for Notre Dame during the Knute Rockne era and was the one who shouted "That was for the Gipper" after scoring a touchdown against Army after the famous Rockne halftime "Win one for the Gipper" speech.
Notre Dame would go on to take both games of a home-and-home series in the 1950's. Then in the late 60's, the series started to have national championship implications.
The Longhorns 1969 season had the squad undeafeated and looking for their second national championship in five years. The two powerhouses played a good game with the Irish edging the Horns late before Texas QB James Street egineered a 76 yard 4th quarter drive that culminated with a Billy Dale touchdown to give the Longhorns a 21-17 victory and the national title.
The Fighting Irish would get revenge the next season by spoiling the #1 ranked Longhorns bid for a 2nd straight national title with a 24-11 win. In the 1977 season, #1 ranked Texas again took on Notre Dame only to be spoiled again in a 38-10 Irish victory which would see the Irish vaulting to the top of the AP poll and winning the national title.
